Narrator
Have you heard of Hersenheid Tower the third, people say he was money mad, but that is not true. He was not obsessed by money, rather, he was possessed, it seemed by an evil spirit.
Narrator
With the demon leading him on, he collected the rare and precious from around the world, and bought them to the hotel Hightower. the specimen that fascinated him the most was Shiriki Utundu.
マンフレッド Manfred
シリキ。ウトゥンドゥ、その偶像の意味は災いを信じよ。その偶像にかかわった者は誰も呪いから逃げられない。
Shiriki Utundu. The idol's meaning is to believe in disaster. None of the people associated with the idol can escape its curse.

私はこのレポートを書く事で、更に強く確信した。ハイタワー・三世の失踪にはシリキ・ウトゥンドゥの呪いが関わっている。
By writing this report, I have further affirmed that Hightower the Third's disappearance is related to the curse of Shiriki Utundu.
マンフレッド Manfred
それを証明するのは容易い事ではない。でも私はその現場に立ち会い、実際にハイタワー・三世の叫び声を聞いたのだ。
To prove that will not be easy. But I was there, at the actual place, and I heard Hightower the Third's screams first hand.

ホテル・ハイタワーの呪い、それをなんとしてもニューヨーク市民に分かってもらわなければ
I must, by any means, get the people of New York to understand.

それが１９１２年という今を生きる新聞記者の使命だと思う。
I believe that to be the duty of a 1912 newspaper reporter.

そんな私のもとに、あるニュースが飛び込んできた。
And then certain news jumped to my attention.

ハイタワー・三世の永遠のライバル、エンディコット・三世がホテル・ハイタワーを取り壊し、代わりに、エンディコット・グランド・ホテルを建設するという計画を発表したのだ。
Eternal rival of Hightower the third, Endicot the Third announced his plans to demolish Hotel Hightower and build Endicot Grand Hotel in it's place.

エンディコット・三世はすでにホテル・ハイタワーの買収を終了しており、ホテル・ハイタワーより豪華で背が高いホテルの建設に多大な熱意を傾けているらしい。
Endicot the Third had already purchased Hotel hightower and was enthusiastically concentrating on building a taller, more glorious Hotel than the Hotel Hightower.
マンフレッド Manfred
今やハイタワー・三世という存在の最後の証とも言えるホテル・ハイタワーを壊す事でエンディコット・三世は長年に渡るライバルとの戦いに終止符を打ちたいに違いない。
By destroying Hotel Hightower, which could now be called the last proof of Hightower the Third's existance, Endicot the Third unmistakably wants to put an end to their long rivalry.

しかし、その計画に真っ向から反対する団体が現れた。
But an organization which straightly opposed that plan appeared.

ホテル・ハイタワーの取り壊しに反対したのは、ニューヨーク市保存協会という団体だった。
The ones in opposition to the demolition of Hotel hightower was a group called the New York city Preservation Society.
マンフレッド Manfred
この協会にはニューヨーカーの富裕層の妻たちやその子息たちは加わっていた。
This society included the support of the new-yorker upper class' wives and their sons.

その影響力は大きく名声も得ているという。協会側はホテル・ハイタワーはきわめて美しく、歴史的にも重要であるため、取り壊すわけにはいかないと主張した。
The power of their influence has gained a lot of fame. The society claims that Hotel Hightower is extraordinarily beautiful and due to being historically important, it certainly should not be demolished.

ニューヨーク市議会もこの主張を無視出来なかった。
Even the New York city council couldn't ignore the claim.
マンフレッド Manfred
ランドマークとしてのホテル・ハイタワーの存在は市の財産であると言っても過言ではなかったからだ。
Because it would be no exaggeration to say that, as a landmark, the Hotel Hightower was an asset to the city.

エンディコット・三世は面白くなかった、彼は心の底からハイタワー・三世を憎んできたのだ。
Endicot the Third was not pleased, for he had detested Hightower the Third from the bottom of his heart.

He and Hightower the Third were bitter foes since their grandfather's generation.

Hightower the Third, 2 years senior to Endicot the Third, had detested him, making Endicot a laughingstock each time possible to do so.

それぞれの親の財産を受け継ぎ、お互いがニューヨーク市の大富豪として名を馳せても、衝突は絶えなかった。
Inheriting each of their father's fortune's, even with them both making their names known as millionaires the conflict never ceased.

Endicot the Third, who owns a newspaper company, used the papers to dirty Hightower the Third's name by using any chance that showed itself.

What should I hide? The very company I serve, New York Global Correspondence, is owned by Endicot the Third.

And, what surprised Endicot the third the most was what he was forced to do at his own discomfort.

それは、ホテル・ハイタワー取り壊しに反対したニューヨーク市保存協会の創立者がこともあろうに自分の娘ベアトリス・ローズ・エンディコットだったという事実。
That was the reality that the founder of the New York Preservation Society was none other than his own daughter Beatress Rose Endicot.

I became interested in this lady called Beatris.

私は幸いにも、ホテル・ハイタワーの取り壊しに反対しているニューヨーク市保存協会の創立者ベアトリスに取材する機会を得た。
Through this happy chance I had gained a reason to cover Beatris, the founder of the New York City Preservation Society, in an article.

インタビュー会場に現れた彼女は本物の社交界のレディに見えた。
The woman who appeared for the interview looked like a true high-class lady.

ペールピンクと緑色のリボンが付いた、ファッショナブルな白いドレスを身に纏っている。
Wearing a fashionable white dress with a pale pink and green ribbon attached.

何年か前、私は彼女に会っていた。好奇心が強く、エネルギーに溢れた１４歳の少女だった。
I had met her several years ago. She was a 14 year old girl, overflowing with energy and had a strong curiosity.

彼女の父親であるエンディコット・三世の自宅に伺った時の事だ。
This is about when I inquired at Endicot the Third's, her father's, house.

I was hired by the New York Correspondence that day.

最初に私は意地悪な質問をした。「実際のところ、今回とられた行動は父親の愛情を裏切る行為ではないかという意見もありますが」
To start with, I asked a cruel question. "Some people are of the opinion that the actions you have taken in this case may be considered a betrayal of your father's affection.."

彼女は怯む事なく、真っ直ぐ私を見てこう言った「ミスター・ストラング、私が父から受け継いだ物があるとしたら、それは正しいと思った事を実行する意思と決意でしょう。」
She didn't falter, but looked straight at me and said this "Mister Strang, if there's anything I've inherited from my father, I'm sure it's the intention and determination to carry out the actions I think are correct."

「父は古い建物を解体して新しい建物に建て替える事が正しいと考え、私は古い建物の中には保存に値する物があると考えているのです。ただそれだけの事です。」
"Father thinks it is correct to dismantle an old building and reconstruct it, I think that within old buildings there are things worth being preserved. That is all."

私はすでにベアトリスに対して、好感を抱いていた。彼女から純粋な情熱を感じた。
I already liked her. I could sense a pure passion from her.

でも私は反対せざるを得なかった。「その意見は至極まっとうです。ただ、」と私は言葉を切った。
But I had no choice but to disagree. "That is an extremely respectable view. Just.." I cut off what I was saying.

次の言葉を彼女がどう受け止めるか、私は彼女の目を見て言った。
How will she take what I'm about to say.. I looked at her eyes and spoke.

"Hotel Hightower is dangerous."

ホテル・ハイタワーの存続を願うベアトリスは私が発した一言に怒りを隠さずに反対した。
Beatris, who wished for the continuation of Hotel Hightower, opposed what I had uttered without hideing her anger.
マンフレッド Manfred
「危険ですって、冗談じゃありません。建物内に構造的欠陥はないと断言出来ます。」
"Dangerous, you say?! This isn't a joke. I can ascertain that there is no structural fault in the building."
マンフレッド Manfred
私は冷静に言った「建物は精神的に腐っているのです。」
I spoke calmly "The building is spiritually rotten."
マンフレッド Manfred
ベアトリスは(飽きれた・呆れた)表情を見せたが、私は続けた。「１８９９年、最後の夜に起きた大惨事、あの現場にあなたはいなかったでしょう。」
Though Beatris looked (to have gotten tired of this | shocked), I continued. "That terrible disaster of that final night in 1899, I'm sure you weren't actually there"

「でも私はいました。私はハイタワー・三世がシリキ・ウトゥンドゥという偶像を虐待した場面を見ましたし、その後、落下するエレベータに響く彼の叫び声も聞いているのです。」
"But I was. I saw the scene of Hightower the third abusing an idol called Shiriki Utundu and I heard his screaming which echoed from the plummeting elevator afterwards."

「壊れたエレベータの中にハイタワー・三世はいなかった。この事件の解釈は一つだけです。」
"Hightower the Third wasn't inside the broken elevator. There is only one explanation to this event."

「まさか、偶像が彼を消したとでも？」ベアトリスは聞く耳を持たなかった。それどころか、ある計画を話してくれた。
"Surely you're not trying to say he was erased by the idol or something." Beatris didn't want to listen. On the contrary, she told me about a plan she had.

I have to stop it any way possible, while thinking this I naturally headed for the Hotel Hightower.

ふとホテルに違和感を感じた。敷地内に何かがいる。なんだろう。私はゆっくり近づいてみた。
I suddenly felt uncomfortable about the hotel. There's something on the premises. What could it be? I approached slowly.

「あっ」と声が出た、そこに一人の女性が倒れていた。
"ah!" I exclaimed, a girl was collapsed there.
