Have you heard of Hersenheid Tower the third, people say he was money mad, but that is not true. He was not obsessed by money, rather, he was posessed, it seemed by an evil spirit.
Narrator
With the demon leading him on, he collected the rare and precious from around the world, and bought them to the hotel hightower. the specimen that fascinated him the most was Shiriki Utundu.
冴子 Saeko
シリキ。ウトゥンドゥ、その偶像の意味は災いを信じよ。その偶像にかかわった者は誰も呪いから逃げられない。
Shiriki Utundu. The idol's meaning is to believe in disaster. None of the people associated with the idol can escape its curse.

父の失踪のなぞを何とか解き明かしたい、そう思って始めたブログだけれど、こんなにも奇妙な出来事を書く事になるとは思わなかった。
Although I started writing this blog hoping to somehow solve the riddle of my father's disappearance, I never thought I'd end up writing about such strange events.

この二週間の間に私の周りで二人の人が突然姿を消してしまった。その二人に共通するのは釘。
In this past two weeks, two people surrounding me have disappeared. The thing connecting the two was the nail.

二人ともある釘をぞんざいに扱った。ある釘とは失踪前に父が私に送った物だった。
Both of them had carelessly handled the nail. The nail my father had sent to me before his disappearance.

父が最近もっとも関心を持っていたのがアフリカだった。アフリカの古い部族が残した物、そこから人間の根本的な営みを探る旅。
Recently my father was most interested in Africa. An item of an old African tribe, and from that went on a journey to discover the fundamentals of human living.

確かアフリカから持ち帰った様々な骨董品があったはずだと思った。でも書斎には雑然と置かれた資料と膨大な書籍以外は何もなかった。
There should definitely be all sorts of antiques from Africa, or so I thought, but in the study there was nothing except scattered documents and bulky books.
冴子 Saeko
可笑しいなと思った。どこかに隠したのだろうか。隠す、そんな意味があるのか。
How strange, I thought. Has he hidden them somewhere? .... Hiding them? Is there a meaning to that?

父の失踪のなぞ、そして父が私に送った釘の秘密が知りたくて、私は父の書斎を調べた。
Wanting to know about the nail and the mystery of my father, I investigated his study.
冴子 Saeko
机の上のファイルケースの一つにホテル・ハイタワーというラベルが貼られている物があった。
A document with a label saying "Hotel Hightower" was in one of the files on top of the desk.
冴子 Saeko
父の手帳にあったホテルだ。そのファイルの一番最初に写真が挟んであった。
It's the hotel from my father's notebook. There was a photograph right at the front of the file.

白黒の気味の悪い写真。何かの宗教の偶像だろうか。
A creepy black and white photograph. Is this some religions idol, I wonder?

写真を裏返すとシリキ・ウトゥンドゥと書かれていた。写真をよく見るとその偶像には無数の金属片が刺さっていた。
On turning the photo over "Shiriki Utundu" was written on the back. Looking closely at the picture, the idol had countless pieces of metal stuck in it.
冴子 Saeko
そして私は声を上げそうになった。偶像には無数の釘が刺さっていた。その釘は私に送られてきた釘にそっくりだった。
And then I almost raised my voice, there were countless nails stuck into the idol. Those nails were just like the one father sent me.

間違いない、この釘だ。それにしても、見れば見るほど気持ちの悪い偶像。シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ。どういう意味だろう。シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ
There's no mistake, its this nail. Even so, the more I looked at it the more creepy the idol seemed. Shiriki utundu... what kind of meaning could that have? Shiriki Utundu...

父の書斎で見つけた一枚の写真、そこに写っていた奇妙な偶像には、無数の金属片と釘が刺さっていた。
The single photograph I found in fathers study showing an odd idol with countless pieces of metal and nails stuck in it.

そしてその釘は父が失踪する前に私に送ってきた物と同じ物に見えた。
And those nails looked exactly the same as the one father sent me before vanishing.

骨董品を扱う商社に勤めている私はさっそくその偶像について調べた。
Being someone who works in a company that deals with antiques, I started investigating the idol right away.

写真の裏には父の字でシリキ・ウトゥンドゥと書かれている。その名前の意味も知りたかった。
On the back of the photo in my fathers writing it said "Shiriki Utundu". I wanted to even know the meaning of that name.

昼過ぎ会社に警察の人が来た。私はいくつか質問を受けた。無理もない、この数ヶ月で私に関わった三人の人が居なくなったのだから。
A person from the police came to the company in the afternoon. I was asked several questions. Its not surprising, since these past few months 3 people concerning me have disappeared.

父、会社の部長、得意先のムナカタさん。
Father, the company's section manager and our best customer Mr Munakata.
冴子 Saeko
「何か思い当たる事ありませんか」とその若い刑事は聞いてきた。
"Don't you have any ideas what's going on?" asked the young detective.
冴子 Saeko
「ありません」と答えた。
"None." I answered.
冴子 Saeko
本当は思い当たる事はあった。釘だ。釘の呪い。きっと笑われる、信じてもらえる訳がない。
In truth, I did have an idea. The nail. The curse of the nail. I'd surely be laughed at, theres no reason he'd believe me.
冴子 Saeko
「居なくなったムナカタさんの家からこんな物が出て来たのですが。」と刑事は大切な婚約指輪でも取り出すようにポケットから写真を出した。
"We found this at the missing Mr Munakata's house." Said the detective, taking a photograph carefully from his pocket as if taking out a precious wedding ring.
冴子 Saeko
「ぁぁっ」と小さく声が出た。写真にはジャングルの中に建てられた祭壇が写っていた。
I let out a small "ah!". The photo was of an altar in the middle of the jungle.
冴子 Saeko
台座の上に載っている偶像、それは正しくシリキ・ウトゥンドゥ。
The idol on top of the pedestal was unmistakably Shiriki Utundu.
Part 4 - 6:50 / 7:50

昼過ぎ、会社に警察の人が来た。写真を見せて、「何か思い当たる事ありませんか」とその若い刑事は聞いてきた。
A person from the police came to the company in the afternoon, showed me a photograph and asked "Don't you have any ideas what's going on?".
冴子 Saeko
そこにはあの奇妙な偶像シリキ・ウトゥンドゥが写っていた。
In that photo, Shiriki Utundu was shown.
冴子 Saeko
「ご存知のようですね。」と刑事が私の心を見透かしたように言うので「いいえ、昔、父の書斎で見た事がある物に似ていたので」と誤魔化した。
"Ah, so you know about this then." the detective said as if he'd seen my thoughts, so I replied falsely "ah, no, it just looked like something I've seen before long ago in my fathers study.".

「そうですか。」と刑事は何故かそれ以上質問しなかった。
"Is that right." Said the detective, for some reason not asking any further questions.
冴子 Saeko
「また来ます」と言い残して刑事は会社から出て行った。
He just left the company after saying "I'll come again."

偶像が祭られていたのはジャングルの中だった。インドネシアそれともアフリカ、そうきっとアフリカだ。
The idol had been enshrined in the middle of the forest. Was it Indonesia or Africa? I'm sure its Africa.

父が最近憑かれたようにのめり込んだ場所。どこかの部族の守り神なのかも知れない。
The place my father had obsessed over as if posessed. It could be the protection god of some place.

私はロッカー室に行き、バッグの中の釘を確認した。
I went to the locker room and checked the nail in my bag.
冴子 Saeko
白いハンカチに包んだそれに触ると少し熱を持っているように感じた。
On touching the nail wrapped in a white handkerchief, it felt as though it held a little heat.

アフリカ文化研究所に行ってみようと思った。
I decided to try going to the African culture research institute.

アフリカ文化研究所には父のお使いでよく通った。白い壁に高い天井、昔病院だったらしい。
I often went back and forth to the African culture research institute on errands for father. White walls and a tall ceiling, I heard it was a hospital in the past.
冴子 Saeko
研究所の署長のトウドウさんが白いひげを摩りながら近づいてきた。
The head of the institute, Mr Todo, approached me while stroking his white beard.
冴子 Saeko
「久しぶりだね、お父さんは元気かね」と聞いてきた。
"Long time, how's your father?" he asked.
