Have you heard of Hersenheid Tower the third, people say he was money mad, but that is not true. He was not obsessed by money, rather, he was posessed, it seemed by an evil spirit.
Narrator
With the demon leading him on, he collected the rare and precious from around the world, and bought them to the hotel hightower. the specimen that fascinated him the most was Shiriki Utundu.

シリキ・ウテゥンデゥ、その偶像の意味は災いを信じよ。その偶像にかかわった者は誰も呪いから逃げられない。
Shiriki Utundu. The idol's meaning is to believe in disaster. None of the people associated with the idol can escape its curse.

１９１２年７月１７日、私マンフレッド・ストラングは、ハリソン・ハイタワー三世なる人物についてレポートを纏めることを決意する。
17th July 1912. I, Manfred Strang am determined to put together a report on the Person known as Harrison Hightower the Third.

新聞社ニューヨークグローブ通信の記者である私がどうしてこんなにもハイタワー三世に拘るのか。
Why am I, a reporter of the New York Globe Correspondence, so obsessive about Harrison Hightower the Thrid?

私は今まで何度も彼について記事を新聞に発表してきた。「呪われたホテル・ハイタワーの謎とは」「事件と何らかの関係か」「謎の偶像シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ」
I have published many articles about him till present. "What is the Mystery of the Cursed Hotel?" "Is there some Connection to the Incident?" "The Mysterious Idol, Shiriki Utundu"

しかし、いたずらに世間は煽るゴシップ記事ではないかという批判を受けた。
But I received some cruel criticism from society, "Aren't these articles just to stir up the gossip?"

「有名に成りたいが為のスタンドプレーではないか」と揶揄されました。
I was ridiculed "Isn't he just playing to the masses because he wants to become famous?"

でも、でも違う、それを信じてもらう為に私は１３年前に起きた、あの奇妙な出来事から話そうと思う。

The night of the 31st December 1899. A party was being held in the hotel Hightower, a hotel with a remarkable presence among a towering group of New York hotels.

大富豪にして冒険家である、このホテルのオーナ・ハリソン・ハイタワー三世の凱旋祝賀会、彼はアフリカのコンゴ川流域に遠征し、３日前に帰国したのだ。
The hugely rich adventurer, this hotels owner, Harrison Hightower the Third had gone on an expedition to Africa's Congo river basin and returned triumphantly to his homeland 3 days ago to celebrate.

パーティー会場アトランティス・ボールルームにはニューヨーク中の名士達がドレスアップして主役の登場を待っていた。
The celebrities of New York were in the Atlantis Ballroom, dressed well and waiting for the entrance of the host.
Part 2 - 3:16 / 5:35
マンフレッド Manfred
タキシードに身を包んで現れたその男が異様なオーラに漂っていた。ハリソン・ハイタワー三世。
The man that appeared dressed in a tuxedo drifted in a strange aura. Harison Hightower the third.
マンフレッド Manfred
彼は会場を見渡し、満足したようにかすかに微笑んで話を始めた。
He looked over the ballroom and seemingly satisfied, with a slight smile started to talk.
マンフレッド Manfred
「今回の遠征は過酷だった」その声は低く場内に響き渡った。
"This expedition was a cruel one." His voice echoed lowly through the hall.
マンフレッド Manfred
「私は自家用ヨット・ハイタワーズ・プライド号でアフリカ西海岸フランス領コンゴ・ロアンゴに出かけた」と彼は続けた。
"I departed for the French territory Loango in Congo, the west coast of Africa on my private yacht." he continued.
マンフレッド Manfred
パーティーにやって来た誰もが彼の話に耳を傾けていた。
Everyone at the party listened closely to his tale.
マンフレッド Manfred
「今ここでこうして皆さんに話していても、あの緊張感が蘇ってくる。。 なぁースメルディング」と彼は近くにいた背の高い男に声をかけた。 "Just talking about it like this to everyone here brings back those tense feelings... right, Smelding?" he continued, calling out to a tall man near him.

執事のスメルディング、ハイタワー三世の片腕だ。スメルディングは無言で小さく頷いた。ハイタワー三世は先を続けた。
Smelding the butler was Hightower the third's right hand man. Smelding wordlessly gave a small nod. Hightower the third went on..

「ムトゥンドゥ族は周りの部族からも恐れられていた。ムトゥンドゥとは現地の言葉で災いという意味。私は全身に震えを覚えながらコンゴ川を登りムトゥンドゥ族に会いに行ったのだ。」
The Muntundu tribe was feared, even by the surrounding tribes. Mutundu, in the local tongue, had the meaning "disaster". While feeling myself tremble, I sailed up the Congo river to meet the Mutundu tribe."

そこで彼は今まで味わった事のない、心を鷲掴みにされるような衝撃を覚えたとは話した。
At this point Hightower talked of the shock he received, shock like none other he had experienced before as though his soul was being gripped tightly onto.

話しながら彼の手は小刻みに震えていた。「この偶像を手に入れる為に、私はあらゆる手を使った。その偶像がこれだ！」とハイタワー三世はいつの間にかスメルディングが持っていた大きな包みを指差した。
His hands started to shake while he talked "In order to obtain this idol, I used every means necessary. That idol is... THIS!" said Hightower, pointing at a large package Smelding was suddenly holding.
Part 3 - 5:35 / 7:30
マンフレッド Manfred
包みの下から現れたのは何とも不気味な偶像だった。小振りな木彫りのその像には仰々しく金属板の欠片と釘が打ち付けてあった。
What appeared from underneath the package was a considerably ghastly idol. The small wooden carved idol had pieces of metal plating and nails hammered into it.

彼はこの醜悪な像を獲得した顛末を話し始めた。ハイタワー三世にとってアフリカコンゴ川探検の旅はこれまで経験した事もないほど過酷な物だった。
He started giving the details around his acquisition of the vulgar idol. For Hightower the third, the expedition to Africa's Congo river was harsher than anything he had previously experienced.
マンフレッド Manfred
執拗に迫る蚊の大群、暗黒の森。まとわり付くような湿気と熱気。そして何より恐ろしいのは現地の部族たちの攻撃だった。
The relentlessly swarming mosquitoes, the dark forest. The choking humidity and heat. And more terrifying than anything else was the attack of the local tribesmen.

ハイタワー探検隊の面々は執事のスメルディング、武装した部下、写真家、調理担当、通訳、現地ポーターの大所帯である。
The Hightower exploration party was a large group consisting of Smelding the butler, armed subordinates, a photographer a cook, an interpreter and some local porters.

しかしいきなりの現地部族の攻撃にポーターのほとんどは逃げ出してしまった。気が付くと隊員の三分の二は姿を消していた。
But in a sudden attack from the local tribesmen, most of the porters fled. When they realized, two thirds of their group had disappeared.

コレクションに加える品物は全く手に入れていなかった。誰もが引き返す事を考えた。ハイタワー三世でさえ挫けそうになった。
They hadn't gotten a single thing to add to Hightower's collection. Everyone was considering turning back, even Hightower himself seemed crushed.

でも彼はこれまでの人生をその不屈の精神で乗り越えてきた。彼はこう言った「勝利という物は敗北から掴み取る物だ。」
But in the span of his life he had overcome all with his persistent mentality. He said the following "Victory is something to be grabbed from defeat."
Part 4 - 7:30 - 9:15
マンフレッド Manfred
最大のピンチはカヌーで上流を目指していた時にやってきた。ある部族が雄叫びを上げながらカヌーに乗って近づいてきたのだ。
Their biggest pinch was when they were aiming upstream, when a certain tribe climbed into canoes and approached them whilst screaming war-crys.
マンフレッド Manfred
矢は絶え間なく放たれ、大きな斧を振り回すのが見えた。
What they saw was arrows being fired incessantly and large axes being swung about.
マンフレッド Manfred
後少しで彼らがカヌーに近づく、そう思った時。。急に彼らが戦いを止めた。それどころか彼らはまるで恐ろしい物から逃れるように居なくなった。
Just a bit more and they'll approach in the canoe! Just as the group were fearing that, the tribe suddenly stopped fighting. What was going on? They disappeared as if escaping from something terrifying.

ハイタワー・一行はちょうどその時、ある大きな木を通り過ぎた。その木は異様な雰囲気に包まれていた。
It was just at that time that Hightower's party had passed a certain large tree. That tree was surrounded in a strange atmosphere.
マンフレッド Manfred
その異様さを醸し出しているのは木肌に描かれていた緑色の二つの目。
What was producing the strangeness was a pair of green eyes painted on the tree's bark.
マンフレッド Manfred
どうやら部族たちはその木に怯えたらしい。現地ポーターが静かな声で言った「もっとも恐ろしいムトゥンドゥ族領地に入りました。」
It seemed the tribesmen feared that tree. The local porter said in a quiet voice "We just entered the most fearsome Mutundu tribe's territory."
マンフレッド Manfred
そしてポーターはこう続けた「ムトゥンドゥとは災いという意味です。」
And the porter continued "'Mutundu' means 'disaster'."
