Harison Hightower the Third, ruthless entrepreneur, infamous adventurer. He was a man obsessed, not by money, no, he was possessed by an unholy desire to collect and hoard, he sought the rare and precious from the far corners of the world and brought them back to the hotel Hightower. But one idol fascinated him most of all.
Narrator
Shiriki Utundu. Shiriki Utundu. Shiriki Utundu.
冴子 Saeko
シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ、その偶像の意味は災いを信じよ。その偶像にかかわった者は誰も呪いから逃げられない。
Shiriki Utundu. The idol's meaning is to believe in disaster. None of the people associated with the idol can escape its curse.

1912年にタイムスリップしてしまった私は新聞記者ストラングとホテル・ハイタワーの中に忍び込んだ。
Having time-slipped to the year 1912, I sneaked into the Hotel Hightower with the newspaper reporter Strang.
マンフレッド Manfred
「ここはハイタワー三世に会う者は必ず待たされる待合室です。」
"This is the waiting room, where people coming to see Hightower the third were invariably kept waiting."
冴子 Saeko
壁には探検旅行の写真が一面に飾られていた。
The wall was covered with photos from exploration trips.
マンフレッド Manfred
「アジア、南北アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、これはエジプトだ。ここに写っているのがハイタワー三世の執事だったスメルディング。写真に写っている美術品の多くはこのホテルの中にあります。」
"Here's Asia, North and South America, Europe and this is Egypt. This person shown here is Hightower the Third's butler Smelding. Most of the artifacts shown in these photographs are within this hotel.
冴子 Saeko
「あの、偶像の写真は？」
"Erm, what about a photo of an idol?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「恐らく書斎の中でしょう。さぁ、入ってみましょう。」
"Most likely within the study I should think. Now, let's go in."
冴子 Saeko
「ええ。」
"Yes."
冴子 Saeko
ハイタワー三世の書斎の中は中世の礼拝堂を思わせるような作りだった。
Inside Hightower the Third's study was made such as to make you think it was a place of worship from the middle ages.
マンフレッド Manfred
「彼は竜というモチーフが好きだったようです。」
"It seems he liked dragons."
マンフレッド Manfred
「見てください、ここにも、そしてこんな所にも竜がいます。」
"Look, here too. And even over here you can see dragons."
マンフレッド Manfred
「この部屋はパークプレースの竜と呼ばれているのです。」
"This room is called 'The dragons of Park Place'."
冴子 Saeko
「なんだか、司祭か牧師にでも会うような気分。」
"I somehow feel like I'm going to meet a rabbi or a clergyman."
マンフレッド Manfred
「正しく、それが彼の狙いなんですよ。」
"No doubt, that was his aim."
冴子 Saeko
「狙い？」
"His aim?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「彼は自分に聖なる力があると会う人に示したかったんですから。」
"He wanted to indicate that he had a holy power to those he met."
冴子 Saeko
「それは・・」
"That's a little.."
マンフレッド Manfred
「そうです、神への冒涜です。私はこう思ってます。」
"That's right, it's sacrilege towards god. That's what I think."
冴子 Saeko
「はい。」
"Right."
マンフレッド Manfred
「ハイタワー三世には恐れる物がなかった。恐らく、神さえも。」
"For Hightower the third, there was nothing he feared. Likely even god."

私とストラングはホテル・ハイタワーの中に忍び込むことにした。
Strang and I had decided to sneak into the hotel Hightower.
冴子 Saeko
人通りもなくなった深夜、月明かりを頼りに入り口に進む。
Late at night with no people around, we used the moonlight as guidance and proceeded to the entrance.
マンフレッド Manfred
「このポーチはホテルの中で一番新しく作られた場所で、唯一アールヌーボー様式が見られます。」
"This porch is the most recently built part of the hotel and from here you can see the hotel's only art nouveau."
冴子 Saeko
「馬車置き場？」
"A coach park?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「ベアトリスはここでツアーのチケットを配布しようと考えているらしい。」
"I heard Beatris is thinking of using it as a place to distribute tour tickets."
冴子 Saeko
「あ・・中庭・・」
"ah, a courtyard.."
マンフレッド Manfred
「ここにはハイタワー三世が世界中から集めた彫刻、彫像が飾られています。」
"Over here is decorated with sculptures and carvings which Hightower the Third collected from around the world."
冴子 Saeko
「へぇ、きれい・・」
"It's beautiful.."
冴子 Saeko
古代ギリシャの女神の像、エジプトの女王は毒蛇を手にしている。
An ancient Greek statue of a godess, the queen of Egypt has a poisonous snake in her hand.
冴子 Saeko
メソポタミアの翼の生えた女神像は恐らく紀元前千年くらいの物だろう。
This Mesopotamian statue of a goddess with wings is probably from about 1000 BC.
冴子 Saeko
満月の光を受けて、ひっそりと佇むその姿は荘厳だった。
That figure standing in the light of the full moon was quite impressive.
マンフレッド Manfred
「冴子さんは骨董品に詳しいのですね。」
"You know a lot about antiques don't you, Ms Saeko."
冴子 Saeko
「ええ、世界の骨董品を扱う商社に勤めていますし、何より父がそれを専門としていますから。」
"Well, I work at a company which deals in global antiques and my father made it his main field of specialty."
マンフレッド Manfred
「そうですか、実際私にはこの価値がもう一つ分からない。」
"Is that so... Actually for me, I don't understand their value at all."
冴子 Saeko
「宝です。人間が作った最高の財産です。」
"They're treasure. The best fortunes created by humanity."
マンフレッド Manfred
「ハイタワー三世はその財産を独り占めしたかったのでしょう。」
"I expect Hightower the Third wanted to monopolise that fortune."
マンフレッド Manfred
「世界中を飛び回っては一つ一つ骨董品を手に入れ、このホテルに陳列していった。」
"He flew around the world collecting antiques one by one and displayed them in this hotel."
冴子 Saeko
「恐らく・・」
"I think.."
マンフレッド Manfred
「はい？」
"Yes?"
冴子 Saeko
「人間には手にしていい物と手にしてはいけない物があるんです。」
"...there are things humans should have, and also things they should not."

私とストラングはロビーに入った
Strang and I entered the lobby.
マンフレッド Manfred
「何もかもがあの時のままだ。」
"Everything is just the same as back then."
冴子 Saeko
「あの時？」
"Back then?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「1899年12月31日の夜に起きたエレベーターの事故。緑色の光に包まれたホテル・ハイタワー、そしてハイタワー三世の失踪。」
"The elevator accident which occured the night of the 31st december 1899. The Hotel Hightower was surrounded in green light and Hightower the Third disappeared."
冴子 Saeko
壮麗で豪華なロビーは不気味な静けさで満ちていた。
The splendid and extravagant lobby was filled with an eerie silence.
冴子 Saeko
植物は枯れ果てている、埃の匂い、くもの巣、薄暗い照明。
The vegetation was withered and dead, there was a smell of dust, spiderwebs and dim lighting.
冴子 Saeko
あの事件で逃げ惑う人が置き去りにした帽子やかばんが散乱している。
The deserted hats and bags of those who had fled were scattered about.
冴子 Saeko
「壮絶な夜だったんですね。」
"It was quite a night wasn't it?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「ええ、実を言うと、今もその時の事を夢に見ます。ハイタワー三世の叫び声もはっきりと覚えています。」
"Yes, to tell the truth, I still see it in my dreams. I can clearly remember Hightower the Third's screams."
冴子 Saeko
「その夜、ここで何があったんですか？」
"What happened here that night?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「ハイタワー三世がアフリカ、コンゴ川流域で手に入れたある偶像をお披露目するパーティーが開かれたのです。」
"A party was held to display an idol which Hightower the third had obtained in Africa's Congo river basin."
冴子 Saeko
「その偶像が・・」
"Was that idol.."
マンフレッド Manfred
「シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ。」
"Shiriki Utundu."
冴子 Saeko
「シリキ・ウトゥンドゥ・・」
"Shiriki Utundu..."
マンフレッド Manfred
「ハイタワー三世はその偶像の恐ろしさを知らなかったんです。」
"Hightower the third didn't know the dread of that idol."
冴子 Saeko
「奥に入って行けば見る事が出来ますか？」
"If we proceed inside, will we be able to see it?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「え？」
"Huh?"
冴子 Saeko
「その偶像を」
"The idol."
マンフレッド Manfred
「冴子さん、私は一人でその呪いの謎を解く覚悟でした。」
"Ms Saeko, I have the resolve to solve the mystery of the curse alone."
冴子 Saeko
「ここまで来たら、引き返せません。」
"After coming this far, I can't go back."
マンフレッド Manfred
「分かりました。」
"I understand."
冴子 Saeko
「行きましょう。」
"Let's go."
冴子 Saeko
こうして私たちはロビーの奥へと進んで行った。
And so we proceeded further into the lobby.

ロビーに隣接するホテル南西部の二階建ての建物は1884年と1885年にインドに探検旅行したハイタワー三世のインスピレーションを元にしたプールとスパだった。
The south-western 2 story building adjacent to the lobby was a pool and spa based on Hightower the Third's inspiration from his exploration trip to India during 1884 and 1885.
マンフレッド Manfred
「内装は全てインドの物で装飾されています。全体がヒンズー風にデザインされているのですが、奇妙な事に建物の外装はイスラム風なのです。」
"The interior design is entirely Indian decor. The whole building is designed Hindu style, but strangely the building's exterior is Islamic style."
冴子 Saeko
「それは何故？」
"Why is that?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「ハイタワー三世が1878年に行ったアラビア探検旅行でイスラム建築関連の装飾品を大量に収集したからだと思われます。」
"It's thought to be because of the large amount of decorations related to Islamic architecture that Hightower the Third obtained during his 1878 exploration trip to Arabia."
冴子 Saeko
「そんなに節操もなく集めて、彼は本当は何が欲しかったんでしょうか？」
"I wonder what he really wanted, collecting so fervently like that."
マンフレッド Manfred
「世界の支配者になりたかったのかも知れません。」
"He may have wanted to become a world ruler."
冴子 Saeko
「支配者・・」
"A ruler.."
マンフレッド Manfred
「あ、このプールには板が張られ、ツアーではここで記念品を販売する予定です。」
"Ah, they plan to put a board over this pool and use it to sell mementos."
冴子 Saeko
「この通路は？」
"What's this passage?"
マンフレッド Manfred
「ホテル内の様々な部屋に通じる、蛇のように張り巡らされた業務用通路です。」
"It's a business-use passage which connects various rooms within the hotel, stretched throughout like a snake."
マンフレッド Manfred
「洗濯、ハウスキーピング、ルームサービス、ワインセラー、ボイラー室、この通路を使ってホテルのサービスが提供されました。」
"The washing, housekeeping, room service, wine cellar and boiler room used this passage to provide the hotel's services."
冴子 Saeko
そうして私たちはハイタワー三世の書斎の外にあるウェティングルームに向かった。 壁には白いひげを蓄えたある紳士が写っていた。
And like this, we headed towards the waiting room outside Hightower the Third's study. There was a picture of a gentleman with a white beard on the wall.
マンフレッド Manfred
「彼がハイタワー三世です。」
"This man is Hightower the Third."
冴子 Saeko
写真の目はまるで生きているかのように私を見つめていた。
The eyes in the photograph stared at me as if they were alive.
