Part 1 01:15 / 03:42

Saeko

Two months have passed since my father suddenly vanished. With no readership to address, I started writing a blog.

Saeko

I want to clarify the riddle of my father's disappearance, even if just a little. At the same time, I am doing this because I hope that my father is still alive somewhere.

Saeko

July the 3rd 2006. Today when I tried to leave for work, a package arrived. The sender was my father.

Saeko

Inside the package was an overused notebook and a nail. A nail? The first page had "Hotel high-tower. Endicot. Shiriki Utundu." written on it in my fathers blue writing.

Saeko

And a nail. A nail, roughly 20 centimetres long and thick. Rather calling it adorn with rust, it was a nail which gave one an incredible sense of time and space.

Saeko

Since I've worked at a company which deals in antique goods for 6 years, I knew this much: this was likely not of Japanese origin.

Saeko

I wonder what my father wanted to convey.

Saeko

When I had written to that point, the nail fell from the table. As if to state its very existence.

Saeko

I'll show it to the section manager tomorrow when I go to work. If I can ask someone like him, who has qualification as an appraiser, I may be able to get some kind of a clue.

Saeko

When I picked up the nail, a shiver ran through my body. It was a moment of numbness as though I had been shocked. I thought of the package from my father as something like an invitation to a terrifying party.

Part 2 03:42 / 05:30

Saeko

A package which came from my missing father, containing an old looking notebook and a large nail. Is this some kind of message to me from father?

Saeko

Firstly, I thought I'd try and find some clues about the nail.

Saeko

I work for a small firm. The company deals in antique goods worldwide. I gathered my courage and tried showing the nail to my section manager.

Saeko

Without telling him it was something my father sent me.

Saeko

He looked at it for a while through glasses, then laughed loudly.

Saeko

I've hated the way this person laughs since a long time ago.

Saeko

"Ah, Kobayakawa-kun, this is just a nail. Well, might as well call it just garbage."

Saeko

The section manager threw the nail in the garbage can whilst laughing.

Saeko

I got angry and said "What are you doing?". "Whats wrong with throwing garbage in the garbage can?" he yelled back.

Saeko

I picked up the nail from the garbage can. The nail was hot. Maybe it was my imagination, but the nail certainly held a heat.

Part 3 05:32 / 06:31

Saeko

The next morning the section manager didn't come to the company.

Saeko

Since he didn't arrive even after lunch had passed, the manager contacted his house.

Saeko

Nobody answered the phone. When the manager visited his house, the door was unlocked. The section manager wasn't there.

Saeko

The rooms showed no signs of a break-in, just the mirrors were cracked.

Saeko

The section manager disappearance and my father's unknown whereabouts, I wonder if the two are connected?

Saeko

I kept reading the notebook's pages, is this a hotel I wonder? The words "Hotel High Tower" were written beside a complex drawing of a building.

Saeko

The Hotel Hightower has fourteen stories but no attic, three sub-basements.

Saeko

With but a single extravagant guest elevator and three for business use. The elevator stops at floor twelve, to go higher you use either the small lift or the stairs.

Saeko

There were detailed notes about the hotel's interior. What was father investigating about this hotel?

Saeko

It was a humid evening when the owner of an antique goods store came.

Saeko

That man, called Munakata, requested of me "I would like to see the nail.". "What kind of nail?" I asked.

Saeko

I went to a bar of Munakata's designation. He was drinking bourbon at the counter. The nail wrapped in a handkerchief in my back pocket quietly awaited its turn.

Saeko

The man called Munakata, acting like he knew the cause of my father's disappearance said with overflowing confidence "Now, about that nail."

Saeko

As if it were some kind of ritual, he finished drinking his bourbon and touched the nail.

Saeko

"I knew it" he said, "This is a priceless treasure." After politely touching the the nail "To tell the truth, I have another nail exactly like this one. Why don't you come to my house?" he invited.
