Windows 2000/XP IME
Here are some simple instructions to install the Windows IME. Please note that you will need the Windows 2000/XP CD if it hasn't been installed previously. For greater depth into the IME system, please see this page.
- Go to Start -> Control Panel. Click on the Regional Options icon.
- Click on the Languages Tab.
- Check the Install Files for East Asians Languages checkbox. Hit Apply. At this point it may ask you for a reboot. Reboot and return to the Languages Tab.
- Click on the Details button.
- Click on the Add button.
- From the list of Input Languages, select Japanese.
- From the list of Keyboard/Layout IME, select Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver. 8.1. Click OK. Microsoft Natural Input 2002 ver. will also be added automatically for you.
- Click the Language Bar button.
- Change the language bar settings according to what you want. It is recommended to show the Language bar on the desktop until you are familiar with the IME's shortcut keys.

Tip
Since the Japanese input has Direct Input, you may remove the English keyboard entry if you want. You can toggle from Hiragana/Direct-Input by hitting Alt-tilde (~)

Other Windows Versions
Microsoft offers Global IME for those running older Windows systems with or without Microsoft Office. (There's a version for with Office and one without.)
There is also third party software such as NJStar that aid in Asian language text entry.
